The Solution
A middle-aged gentleman, slightly “under the weather” caused'some amusement in an Auckland cigarette queue recently. He approached almost every person in the line and asked how many cigarettes each would like. Most of them, f expecting him to offer some for sale, said that they would like as many as possible. “I’ll tell you what to do,” he said confidentially. “Just as soon as you get your smokes go round to the end of the queue and get some more.” Garbage Girl
The war and American servicemen spread the cult of the “pin-up girl” far and wide and artistic studies of Hollywood beauties have come to rest in strange places. In Auckland one may be seen adorning the side of a City Council garbage disposal dray. Daily, over the fair lady’s head, are lifted the shovel loads, of broken glass, cigarette butts* dirty paper and the hundred and one other things that go In make the sweepings of . the “ l ty streets.
Sunspots Increase The largest general increase in sunspot activity since October of last year has bee nobserved by the director of the Carer Obstervatory, Mr I. L. Thomsen. He said that a total of eight separate solar disturbances containing 37 single spots were visible. Six of those groups stretched over a distance of 632,000 miles. The largest group, which was past the central meridian, had a length of 43,000 miles. The indications were that the sun was now well past the minimum stage of activity, which was probably increasing rather rapidly.
White Island Gypsum Deposits A party which was arranged by the Whakatane Paper Mills Ltd., visited White Island recently and included in its number was Mr Lionel Lane an engineer from the United States Machining Co. of New York, who, on learning of the presence of gypsum on the island, wish*ed to investigate the quantity available. Gypsum is used extensively in the manufacture of wall board., and the Dominion’s requirements at present are obtained from Australia. Although the substance was located on the island, indications are that it is not available in commercial quantities.
