GAY AWAKERI GATHERING

MEN FROM OVERSEAS

Six' men recently returned from service overseas were officially welcomed bjr the Awakeri community last Saturday evening. They were 2nd Lieut. G. Honcycombe. W. 0.1 J. Melville, ides D. Baty j). King., M. Jensen and, C. Jones' The hall was well filled and the lird. of the popular Awakeri Monte. Carlo, competitions for a prize of £6 10s was again initiated.

The chairman of the committee,.. Mr Col McDonald who was also acting as M.C., extended, the. districts, warmest welcome to the guests and presented each with an envelope and its contents on behalf of the \ Awakeri people generally. Following musical honours, Lieut. Honey- / combe spoke for the returning men thanking all who had been respon- \ sible for their very warm welcome and mentioning especially the work of the Patriotic Committee and the Red Gross, in connection with the men on active sendee. 5

Music for the evening was supplied by Mrs King’s Waimana orchestra while once again the ladies? committee attended, to the supper

arrangements. The Monte Carlo created great' interest and tlie lucky winners of the heat were Miss Heather Bell and Mr Rav Dawson.

As in the past Messrs J. Baty and J. A. Boulcott attended as doorkeepers a post they have faithfully filled for the whole of the period during which the committee has been functioning.
