THE OHOPE GALA DAY

R.S.A. QUEEN CARNIVAL FUNDS

A RECORD ATTENDANCE TRIBUTE TO ORGANISATION Anniversary Day (Tuesday) will Ik memorable in Whakatane for the remarkably well organised and. splendidly successful Gala Day at Oh ope Beach in the interests of Princess Beverley, whose cause is sponsored by the. Old Veterans and Business.men’s Committee in the R.S.A. •Queen ' Carnival which is now growing in scope as-each section opens its programme. Perfect weather find a record. at- ‘ tendance, rewarded the various work' -ers who had been quietly preparing for the big day for some, time past, • and although no figures are to be

released at present we learn on good -authority that something between 3:200 and £3OO clear profit crowned the day’s effort. It is impossible, to record the Karnes of. all those who worked so -indigently towards the success of the day but special thanks arc undoubtedly due to Mr Fred Burt who once -again took over the microphone of the public address system.- Fred did a great j,ob in keeping the public competitors informed of what was 'doing throughout the day and was largely instrumental in keeping the programme running with clocklike precision. The girls marching teams were the highlight of the day' and afforded the judges a most difficult task in determining the winning team. This ■event is new to the Bay and the enthusiasm with which it was received is a sure indication that it i,s likely to become a popular item at all carnivals. The Boys Brigade, at pre-

sent camped at Ohope, were also prominent throughout the day in -competing in various events. Their marching too was of a high stand, ard. The whole day attracted a crowd variously estimated at between .2000 and 3000 persons. The gathering bad so /many points of interest that it was impossible to experience .one dull moment, and wc have nothing but the highest praise for the

committee and the small army of officials which ran the various events. The Caledonian Hall was the scene ,of a very successful dance in the .evening "which attracted some 150 .couples.
