DISTRICT RIVERS

HIGH TEMPERATURES RECORDED

EFFECT ON FISHING

Throughout the entire district, the seriousness of the present drought, is reflected in the rivers and streams, all of which are either running at an exceptionally low level, or have dried up altogether. Normally at this time of the year, the majority of river temperatures are somewhere under sixty degrees. The temperature of the Rangitaiki is at present (iS degrees whilst the majority of others stand at about G 6 degrees. The level of the former has dropped considerably. Many other rivers have dropped up to 18 inches, whilst the Tarawera at a conservative estimate is down about nine inches. The rate at which the river levels have dropped, and the temperatures risen, has had an adverse effect on fishing. Sluggish and tending to lie dormant the fish can apparently be tempted’ with nothing, and a number of visitors have bad to forego their sport until a change in the weather comes.
