Maori Comedian

Armed with a tripod of scantling surmounted by an empty jam tin a middle-aged Maori caused quite a humorous diversion at the welcome extended to men of the Maori Battalion at Poroporo last Friday. With alb the authority of a photographer lie waved the officials aside and poked his head, under a piece of sacking. He was the subject of an interesting study by the more official photographer, Mr C. F. Thomas, who snapped him in the act.

Whale Near a Launch

The appearance of a whal e.about 50ft long near their launch caused some concern to members of a party returning recently from Mayor Island to Waihi Beach. It disported itself round the boat for about an hour and at one stage was so close that one. of the men stated that he could almost have reached out and touched it. The launch was rocking violently in the wash of the whale and the party got their dinghy ready in case the launch was damaged or capsized. The whale disappeared after the launch crossed the first sand bar a few miles off Waihi Beach.
