The following is the Whakatane United team which has been selected to represent "Whakatane in the match against.Paroa on the Whakatane Domain on Sunday January 27: Higden (2) ) Fisher Whitehead, Parkes Cameron Springy Crawford, Reid, McKenzie and Roach.
Show Jumping Competition In connection with class -55, in the forthcoming A. and P, Show, we have been asked to state that in this important Jumping Event there will be no concessions made to members of the Show as printed in the schedules.
Daily Service to Auckland Advice has been received from the Railway Road Services that the through passenger service to Auckland which leaves Opotiki at 11 a.m. (Whakatane depart 12.55 p.m.) and the return service leaving Rotorua at 5 p.m. lor Opotiki, will commence running daily including Sundays as from Sunday, 27th January. There, will he no connection from Gisborne on Sundays.
Petty Theft Charges Willie Topia a young Maori of Matata appeared in the Whakatane Court before Mr E. L. Walton last Tuesday charged with the theft of 15/- in cash and a packet of tobacco. Accused who was described as not being very strong mentally, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within six months in the meantime he was ordered to remain in employment as directed by the Probation Officer.
Learn-to-Swim Week
The newly formed Whakatane Swimming Club will be sponsoring a learn-to-swim week which will be 9 held the whole of next week. During this period there will he numerous opportunities promoted by the club for swimming lessons, displays and exhibitions for the benefit of teaching swimming generally and of assisting the. non-swimmer. Every effort will be made to encourage people to take lessons which will equip them for a lifetime of, useand the week is particularly dedicated to the younger section of the community. » \
Whakatane Retains Snooker Cup The challenge for the Billiards Ltd. Cup from Ruatoki which played before a gcod crowd of spectators in Mr J. Hamv right’s billiard saloon the Strand on Tuesday even- ’ » ing, resulted in Whakatanc. winning the necessary four out of eight games thereby retaining the hup. Some first class potting was seen and the local ream definitely proved its superiority in snooker. Results were as follows:' Morgan 7(3 beat Amoi 8; Thompson 50 beat W. Keepa 33; McGarvey 63 beat T. Biddle 37; R. Kecsing 50 beat K. Hoiurai 18 Wbakiitane players are mentioned first in each case. The above games were the first four on the list, making it unnecessary to play the remainder. Mr Bob Whittaker was the official marker.
