Letter From Churchill
Wc draw the attention of our readers to the article appearing on page 6 of. this issue, which sets out how a local resident came to he. the recipient of a letter from the great Winston Churchill himself.
Permit Granted Information has been received to the effect that a permit lias been granted to the R.S.A. lor the holding of a race meeting at Te Teko, in connection with the Queen Carnival at present being staged. The programme and date, have yet to be arranged with the Auckland District Committee. Grass Fire Opposite Wharf
A patch of glass and scrub opposite the Northern Steamship Company’s wharf caught fire yesterday at 12.15 p.m. As the 11 allies were spreading and appeared to be threatening a nearby house, it was considered expedient to summon the Brigade. This was done., and the fire speedily extinguished.
Challenge Accepted A challenge from a Ruatoki team for the Billia'rds Ltd. Cup has been accepted by Whakatane and will he played on Tuesday evening at Mr J. Hanwright’s billiard saloon. The Whakatane team will he the same, with the exception of Hudson, who is at present out of the district. A large attendance of spectators is expected.
Foreign Liquid Business folk on their way to work yesterday were noticed to pause at the junction of Commerce Street and tlie Strand, by the Pohaturoa Rock, and stare curiously at a foreign transparent liquid lying in several small pools on the roadway. Yes, it was actually water although the sight of it lying in such a position was strange, to behold.
Maori Regatta Owing to unforsecn circumstances the Maori Regatta which was. to have been held on the waterfront on the 26tb of January, has now been "postponed until March 2nd. The committee has been promised the encouragement and co-operation of the Borough Council and there is every reason to believe that it will be a complete success.
Fire on Launch
Through a small petrol stove exploding on the launch of Mr C. Snell of Ohiwa, Louis Agassiz, and Ins daughter, aged about fifteen years received widespread burns to their faces., arms and legs. They were conveyed to the Opotiki hospital, the burns being not of a serious nature. Fire broke out in the cabin of the launch, but the flames were extinguished before much damage was done.
Local Crippled Children
At tlie Whalcatane Hospital Board meeting last Thursday, the Medical Superintendent, Ur. E. 1. Dawson, reported that a number of local children (cripples) had been examined by an Arthopaedic Specialist from Auckland and had been recommended for treatment either at the Wilson Home or the Auckland Hospital. Five children were concerned mainly with clubbed feet. The Board decided to agree to the recommendations .
