LEARN-TO-SWIM POOL
DEVELOPMENT AT OHOPE
FUND FOR SUPERVISION
By way of establishing a fund for the purpose of paying an official supervisor to he in attendance at all times it is in use the promoter of the Ohopc Learn-to-Swim Pool. Mr F. Mahy, acknowledges a further list of donations from campers and residents.
Iho pool was out of use for two seasons owing to the cloudburst in the valley destroying the dam which supplied the water and which also filled the tiny tots paddling pool with silt and logs, and heaping logs and rubbish all round the pool itself. Before Christmas a working bee of boys- with great enthusiasm cleared the paddling pool, while a camper who was pressed into service willingly cleared the heavy growth and soil away from round the pool in preparation to placing seats for the parents of tiny tots. A further working bee built J a concrete dam up the stream, but owing to the altered conformation of course of water the dam had to be built higher up and those interested were short of 41) feet of 2 inch pipe to connect up. However owing to the publicity given an old camper stated that if a team was prepared to go twenty miles, they could dig up' enough 2 inch pipe which was needed and which would be donated. So a number of campers with Mahy Bros travelled the twenty miles and the pipe was dug up brought in and connected up the same day by the Mahy Plumbing Co. and the pool was filled and in use on Christmas Day.
The next problem was a fund for the employing of a competent man to supervise the pool during the time it was open also to clean the surroundings which were covered with a very rank growth. This work has now been done. Unfortunately the day following that when the pool was in use vandals threw a dozen bottles into the water, smashed several and also other rubbish. On top of this they then. emptied the pool which had to be cleaned up next day. Mr Mahy submits a statement of funds collected for the above object and adds that he would like, to stress the wonderful response to the appeal which shows how the general public appreciate l®;e object of teaching children to swim. He has now in view the concreting of the floors of the dressing sheds in the pool enclosure.
