HOSPITAL RATING
MANGONUI'S GREAT STAND
NEW LEGISLATION NOT UNDERSTOOD
That the position created by the new legislation passed through Parliament recently in its effect on County Councils which refuse to strike hospital rates was gravely misunderstood was disclosed by Mr A. C. A. Sexton in a report to the Executive of the N.Z. Farmers.' Union (Auckland Province) at its last meeting. What it sough: to do 7 he was to make elective provision to local bodies to supply rolls lor rating purposes and, where there was refusal to supply individual penalties were provided for. The Government he added, had the rolls for areas rated on capital value but not where annual or rental values were the basis. This had no application to Mangonui. Mr C. B. Michie (Kaitaia) reported on''the position as it now stood in the Mangonui area and the following resolution was carried unanimously:— ''That the executive instruct its legal adviser to consult with such Minister of the Crown as he may deem necessary with a view to exploring the situation in the Mangonui County and the possibility of affecting a compromise settlement without victimising the ratepayers of that County. It was also decided: '"That a letter of appreciation expressing congratulations and admiration be sent to Mr Michie and Mr Bird, the farming community of the Mangonui area and the County Councillors of Mangonui for their efforts in regard to hospital derating in that district."
