SCOUTS AND CUBS

BREAK-UP SOCIAL HELD' PRESENTATION OF AWARDS Approximately sixty Scouts and Cubs, and a number of parents gathered at the Caledonian Hall on Monday evening for the final break-t up ceremony and social of the year. Both the local Land and newly l'orm r ed Sea Scout Troops were represented under S.M. E. Hughes and Skipper J .Love j respectively and the two Cub Packs attended under Cubmasters L. Dean and M.-Hughes. Proceedings opened with a grand howl by the two Cub which was immediately followed by an item by a further eight Cubs. This was in the form of a group recitation the piece chosen being Kip~ ling's "Law of the Jungle." The manner in which each Cub recited two of the laws the wolves in the jungle must follow if they wish to survive was very effective. A little more strenuous activity followed in the form of a tug o' war ? with all teams slipping and sliding all over the place as they endeavoured to keep their l'eet on the slippery surface. The well known game of 'Dog anid Bone' kept the attention of the Cubs occupied lor the next, ten minutes. Two lines were formed and each Cub given a number. A bag of sweets was placed in the middle of the floor and a number called, wheraupon the two Cubs (one from each line) dived lor the prize. the losers were not as eJich received, a 'consolation prize' at the conclusion. Vocal talent Avas well to the fore amongst the Sea ScoUts tj for the next two items were songs rendered by groups of three and Ave matelots. The applause in each case was hearty indeed. The prize giving ceremony was the next to take S.M. Hughes presenting the awards. The. first ones went to Cubs who had earned marks for merit during the and also to those who had gained their second star. The recipients were: Jimmy Kilgour Ronald Os-> wald, Barry Flay ? Ronald Hughes (2) t Phillip Lynds' (2)„ Barry Hai*Clive Mark Dainton } Andrew Neil Reid, John McGormick Peter Needham, Robin Zinsli ( Laurie McCormick f Graham Ross. Presentations on behalf of the packs were made by Andrew Baketf to Cubmaster L. Dean and by Jimmy Kilgour to Cubmaster M. Hughes. Two very fine sheath knives, were presented to Scouts George Goodall and Alistair McLay # by District Commissioner N. Mathews and S.M.. in recognition of their work within the troop. Following the presentations, a parade of all Scouts and Cubs was and Commissioner Mathews delivered a short address. The Scoutmaster Skipper and Cubmasters also spoke a few words to their individual troops. The evening concluded with an excellent with soft drinks, for the Cubs, tea for the Scouts and visitors and delicious cakes for all..
