BEACON Publishing 1 Days There will be no publication of the BEACON on Tuesday next (Christmas Day). The office will remain closed until Thursday morning when it will be open for the transaction of normal business until Friday evening. The usual publication on Friday (December 28) will take place. All players to be on' the ground at J>. J 3O a.m. Otakiri Carnival Dance The attention of dance-lovers is drawn to the Otakiri Carnival dancc to be held on New Year's Eve (Dee,ember 31). This promising event has been changed from its original title of 'Ball' owing to' catering difficulties, but the committee is determined to make it more outstand-j ing than ever by introducing New Year novelties and lun which cannot fail to delight all who attend. Stock Inspector Support for the council's endeavour to .secure a permanent Stock Inspector for the district was conveyed in a letter to the Whakatane County Council last Tuesday from the Manawahe Branch of the N.Z. Farmers' Union. The letter read: "The Manawahe Branch- of the Farmers' Union wish wholeheartedly to join with the Whakatane County Council in their request for an improved Stock Inspection service for the Opotiki-SWhakatane district. Our district is situated,at the western boundary of the Whakatane County the town of Whakatane being our business centre. At the present time we are part of the Tauranga Stock District with headquarters seventy miles away. Consequently our connection is practically negligible. The transfer of our district to the Whakatane County's suggestion would be a definite advantage and we beg your most favourable consideration." Ohope Learn to Swim Pool As is well known, the learn to swim pool built at Ohope mainly through the efforts of Mr F. Mahy Sen. has been out of commission for some considerable time owing to the feeding pipes being swept away in the heavy flood some fifteen months ago. Mr Mahy Sen. has succeeded in erecting a new dam Avith the assistance of members of his c family, f and every effort will be made to have the pool in commission during the forthcoming holiday season. He is at present short of several lengths of tA\-o inch piping Avhich ? just now, is impossible to and appeals to any person Avho might have some in their possession to assist him by making it over in the interests of the children. Mr Mahy intends promoting a SAvimming carnival for children in the early New Year for which a small charge Avill be made to the enclosure. It is his intention also to establish a permanent fund for the posting of an attendant at the baths Avhenever they are in use.
