CLEANING WORK PROCEEDING THROUGH TO KING STREEJT Considerable, satisfaction was expressed by councillors at Monday night's meeting oi' Hie Borough Council when the foreman Mr W. S. Henderson, reported that a start had been made on the deepening and widening of the Wainui Te Whara drain by means of a mechanical high loading shovel. The re,- ! suits so far Jiad been highly satisfactory. In answer to Cr Sullivan the J engineer stated that the cost was roughly £25 daily and that it would take a little over a week to clean up to Douglas Street though he could not answer for the bed of 'the creek continuing to stand the weight of the nine ton machinc. The council decided to instruct the engineer to proceed while he was able to get the services of 'the machine as l'ar as King Street and to clean the Avhole of the drain out for its full length, irrespective of the cost. The question of keeping the drain clear of obstacles was raised by the engineer who urged that legal steps be taken to penalise any person I blocking or obstructing the channel in any way. The Town Clerk was instructed to write the adjoining propertyholders to thtft effect.
