SUCCESSFUL EVENING

ROWING CLUB ENTERTAINS POPULAR FLANNEL DANCE Well to the fore on Saturday evening was the banner of the Whaka,-< tane Rowing Club which emblemised one of the best and most popular flannel dances* to be held, in the Caledonian Hall for some considerable time. The. function was held under the auspices of the Whakatane Caledonian Society; the secretary of which } Mr W. Hurst } later in the evening handed to Mr. Bert Norman , t Club Captain of the Rowing Club the sum of £20. Danccrs came from all parts of the district attracted largely by the publicity given the function both through the usual mediums t and by word of mouth.. By 9.30 the hall was well filled, and the evening was proceeding in top-top fashion. The Premier Band supplied the whilst Mr Harry Mole was Master ol' Ceremonies. Decorations distinctly suggested the sport they typified. The club's banner stood out boldly over crossed oars at the front of the stage whilst the whole was offset J by greenery tastefully arranged. A free, and easy born no doubt by the fact that the men in all cases lacked ties (by request) •and danced, with all in short frocks and wearing paper hats, pervaded the whole gathering, and served to make the function a sue. cess from the very beginning. A kiosk serving soft drinks was a popular between-dance rendezvous. Supper was well served and enjoy-' j able. j Novelty dances were well to the i fore } and competitors were plentiful (although winners were noticed to be rather chary about opening their; prizes in public). Successful coup.; les in these were as under:—Monte Carlo: Mr Dick Hansen and Miss I. Sullivan. Lucky Spot Waltz: Mr George Hay ward and partner. Lucky Spot Maxina: Mr and Mrs W. Hurst. Perhaps the most popular number | of the evening was a confetti dance. This latter substance was j and couples all over the hall sprayed all other couples within range liberally. Altogether the whole function may be classiiied as an unqualified success and we trust tlia* more of such a type will be held in the not too far distant future.
