THE SEA SCOUTS
HARBOUR BOARD'S INTEREST AN ENCOURAGING GESTURE Practical interest and assistance was. shown by the Whakatane Harbour Board at its meeting last Friday when it was unanimously decided to foster the Sea Scout movement recently started in the town j by making its gear at the Heads available for training for boys and also by making over a goodwill donation towards the troop of £10. The gesture, was in response to a deputation from the committee in the shape of the County Scout Commissioner who stated that the boys were being trained as future seamen | were being taught to swim and to and were now going into the matter of constructing their own boat. The troop was new as, yefc but had an excellent and was making headway under an ex-Imper-ial Navy man. The chairman, Mr W. ,R. ]3oon ? said he welcomed the move and l'elt that the Board should do all in its power to foster it as he agreed with the Commissioner that there were not suil'icient boys from this country who took to sea-faring life ? and were able to look after themselves on the water and navigate a boat. There were far too many fatalities arising out of a lack of this knowledge and he was pleased to see the creation of a troop in Whakatane. Messrs C. T. Smith and R. Rud r dick also spoke strongly in favour of supporting the troop to the utmost. In expressing his thanks the Commissioner asked the Board mem 4 to attend a future demonstration by the ladis when they were more advanced.
