INSTRUCTIVE FIELD DAY
LOCAL BEEKEEPERS VISIT OPOTIKI A field day, which proved to be exceedingly interesting and instructive was held recently by the Whakatane Beekeepers Association at Mr Stan Pearee's apiary Opotiki. Nine members altogether made the trip and the programme which had been arranged more than warranted the mileage covered. The first part of the afternoon was spent at one ol' Mr Pearee's outconsisting of some l'ort3 r hives. A number of these were opened for inspection and a demonstration of how to form a nucleus was given. The latter part of the programme took place at Mr Pearee's home where his queenery is established. Here a detailed demonstration of the method used in breeding and raising queen bees took place and a number of visitors 'tried their hands' at making queen cell 'cups' and trans-, ferring brood. The power extractor anil much of the other equipment was also shown to the visitors. Added interest was given by the presence of a who recorded the programme with a num. ber of 'shoes' ol' the activities.
