REHABILITATION AID
CHILDREN OF DECEASED SERVICEMEN Rehabilitation facilities lor cliildr ren of deceased or totally incapaci-' taled servicemen were discussed at a recent meeting of the Rehabilitation Board. It was decided that such facilities should be limited to educational career and trade training and in certain circumstances housing assistance. It was also decided that applica r tions from children over 18 years of age at the time the war ended should be considered in relation to any service they had performed in the armed forces and to any loss of they had experienced during their parents' service as a result of the latters senice. All applications for career assistance would be considered on their mer_ its ? taking into account the aptitude of the child concerned. The actual amounts of any subsidies or bursaries to be granted would be tler cided according to the wages payable to ordinary civilian yauths, and to the age of the child and the necessities of children of such an age. It Is not proposed to subsidise apprenticeships as a general policy. In Aery special cases the Board would consider farm training but this would not extend to : Rehabilitation financial assistance for Land Settlement. In regard to farm training it was held that youths who wished to adopt farming as a career had usually to leave home and take employment on a farirr earning sufficient for their needs. When the time came when they wished to acquire a farm of their own they could not usually look for help from their parents. For that reason •rehabilitation assistance of such a nature did not seem justified. Applications for housing assistr a nee are to be treated on their merassistance given will be subject to, its, Avith the stipulation that any there being adequate arrangements for tlie care of the. children and there being a suitable person availablc to undertake the obligations of tenancy or loan on their behalf.
