A SOUTH AUCKLAND BOARD
QUESTION OF ESTABLISHMENT
PROPOSAL BEFORE COMMITTEE
At the last meeting of the Whakatane School Committee, a circular letter was received from the Hamilton Federation of Parent Teacher Associations proposing that a. new South Auckland Education Board be established in order to split the number of schools at present controlled by the. Auckland Board, and thereby afford more attention to each individual school. The circular asked the following questions:
1. Is the Whakatane School Committee .satisfied with the Auckland Education Board as at present constituted ? 2. Does the Committee regard it as being too large ? 3. Is the Committee in favour of forming a separate Board ? 4. Would this make for easier administration ?
A negative answer to the lir&t question was recorded, whilst the latter three were .replied to in the affirmative.
Discussing the matter, Mr 11. D. Paterson pointed out that the committee knew none of the members of the Auckland Board personally, except the few who had been .to Whakatanc. If a South Auckland Board were formed ? closer contact could be maintained. The Auckland Board at present dealt with half the schools in New Zealand and it was impossible to give them all the time and attention necessary.
The Chairman (Mr J. W. Wilson) outlined the manner in which the present Board worked, and added that it was obvious that it simply did not have time to cope with all that was. required of it.
The Headmaster (Mr 1. B. Hubbard) said that if the Board were not split the only way to obtain satisfactory results was to increase the allocation of members.
The committee agreed that the present area was too large for one Board to handle and thought that if it were decentralised each school would receive more individual attention .
It was decided to reply to the effect that the Wliakatane School Committee strongly favoured the constitution of a South Auckland Education Board.
