"Foot trouble was fairly constant among farm horses- and 1 was called to see one horse which was said to have been lame for only a; day or two " said Mr Haugh in telling of his early experiences in England. The owner stood next to the fence the health inspector at the other fence and he in the middle • ready to .shoot the cow. "When the smoke cleared," said Mr "the cow was nowhere to be seen. We each .said the animal had not passed us and the Maori decided that it was a very good shot as the cow had been blown to pieces. However .search showed that the cow had.rolled into a hole covered by manuka scrub which had swung back into position after the cow had fallen into the hole."
