WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

MEETING AT THORNTON

The meeting of the Thornton Women's Institute held on November Bth was well attended and enjoyed by all present. The roll call was 'A Cure for the Hlue.s' and produced some interesting remedies J'or any ail'ectcd with that complaint. The meeting discussed arrangements for a children's party and a dinner was raffled for funds lor Christmas Tree decorations and toys. A collection ol' one penny per mem-! her was made for Women's International Day. Afternoon tea was served by Mrs Flynn Mrs Dudson and the Misses Jackson. Members all enjoyed a pianoforte duet played by Mrs Craddock and Mrs Smith and a solo by Mrs Craddock. The president expressed appreciation and presented each lady with a shoulder spray. Competition winners were: Best llower: Mrs. Arbuckle 1: Mrs Law 2. Best vegetable: Mrs Carson 1; Mrs Watts and Mrs Currie 2. Red white 'J and blue posy: Miss Ballard 1: Mrs Ducker 2. Pikelets: Mrs. Law 1; Mrs Branch 2. Gift for Xmas tree: Mrs McDonald 1; Mrs Currie 2. On November 1 a glove making demonstration was held \vlien j under the able instruction and guidance of Mrs- Stewart of the Whakatane branch_ a large number of members made for themselves a handsome and useful pair of gloves.
