R.S.A MEMORIAL WELFARE APPEAL

THE objective behind the forthcoming" Queen Carnival promoted by the Whakatane Returned Services' Association,. cannot fail to draw the utmost public support, and we have no fears but that the sum in mind—and more will be fully realised. The local R.S.A. has ever identified itself with the activities of the younger veterans of World War II and its active sponsoring- of the new campaign to establish a substantial welfare fund will, be warmly applauded. It was announced last Wednesday when country delegates met the R.S.A. delegates that it was anticipated the Carnival would commence towards the end of Januarys 1946,. and that it would extend over three months. Already in town the committees are champing at the bit to become active and it is anticipated that there will be no holding the enthusiasts who compose them from at least commencing in an unofficial manner and accumulating, as it were 'funds up their sleeve.' However if the friendly rivalry between the neighbouring communities can be made keen we have no qualms whatsoever about the outcome. During the whole of the Patriotic appeals, the Whakatane district has proved that it is populated by a generous and freely-giving public. Now arises an opportunity for direct giving for the. benefit of needy ex-servicemen in the future.- As the fund when it. is established will be under the direct administration of tha soldier's own organisation it is doubly certain of reaching the men who need assistance or their immediate dependents.
