Concrete Work Held Up lie-porting to the Borough Council last Monday evening, the ForemanEngineer, Mr W. S. Henderson, .stated that the non-arrival of a shipment of cement had resulted in the protection work in the Wainui Te Whara Gorge being held up until such time as the new supplies ar--rived. Home-made Rat Trap An unusual circular was received by the Borough Council at its meeting last Monday from one James Allan, of Nelson. This depicted a home-made rat t.rap ? composed of two up-ended bowls supported by a small lump of cheese. The idea behind the device Avas that Mr Rat or Mouse ? as the case may be gnawed away at the cheesy and collapsed the bowls on top of himself. All that remained for the householder to do was to pick the bowls up smartly, and throw them and their prisoner into a tub of water. The inventor suggested that the council purchase his circulars at 15s per hundred with a view to successfully combating the rat and mouse population of Whakatane. The council's unofficial reply was "Nothing doing" and the matter Avas received.
