GAOL FOR THEFT
YOUNG MAORI IN COURT
STOLE FROM EMPLOYER
Before Messrs G. Brabant and J. King in the Whakatane Court last a young Maori farm labourer Haunui Hohoia pleaded guilty to the theft of a shovel, a hammer and two bags of maize the property of Peter Balrtf.
Sergeant Farrell said that accused was working for Baird for two months and after his departure it was discovered that numerous, things were missing including the items mentioned in the charge. Accused had been interviewed and admitted his guilt. In a statement to the court ae--9 cused said that he did not realise he was actually stealing, and had mistaken the tools for some of his own. He did not think Mr Baird would mind his taking the maize as they were good friends.. Accused was sentenced to one month's imprisonment in the local gaol.
