CATTLE STOLEN
PROBATION FOR MAORI A Maori drover and farmer, Wi Whetu, aged 37 (Mr Coates),, who had pleaded guilty at Whakatane to a charge of stealing eight cows, came before Mr Justice Cornish 1 for sentence last week. Mr Coates pointed out that accused claimed that while he was driving cattle near a riverbed some cows became mixed in the herd. When he delivered the herd he told the European farmer of the. extra cows which he had been unable to cut out from the herd. The other man had been charged with cat-l* stealing also and was to come up for trial. Whitu was admitted to probation for 32 months and was ordered to pay £5 costs.
