Telegraph Service With reference to telegraphic service with Rangoon, advice- now received that messages may also lie written in French language or one of the following codes: Bentleys Second Phrase (Bensec),, Bentleys Complete Phrase (Bencom); A.B.C. Sixth Edition (A.8.C.) and Western Union (W.U.) Code addresses not admitted. Careless Cyclists The manner in which cyclists were in the habit of leaving their machines lying on the. footpaths, was commented on by Councillors at the meeting of the Borough Council last evening. The Mayor stated that there was a definite shortage of bicycle parks in Whakatane, and he. hoped that something could be done to increase the present number of stands. It was decided to instruct the Foreman-Engineer to go into the matter and report back. The Leper Mission In the British South Solomons a native woman an outcast from her relatives and friends was found by a European Minister giving birth to a child under a pandanus tree. During her labour of four hours; she was assisted by the Missioner who reports that the poor creature was "riddled with leprosy." The Lepers' Trust Board is assisting ail Mission Bodies to open up and equip dispensaries in these Islands lor the treatment of such cases. No Power of Amendment An interesting point cropped up during t'he hearing of th«e traffic prosecutions in the Whakatane Court last Tuesday. The name of a woman defendant had been entered wrongly in the information and Counsel requested that the Magistrate would make an order amending the name in order that the case should proceed. He indicated a letter from the defendant pleading guilty to the offence, outlined. "I cannot do what you request," said Mr E. L. Walton S.M. If the •9 defendant were -here it would be a different matter but in her absence, I have no power to acccde to your request. The only procedure for you to take is to reswear your information or arrange, for the defendant or lier representative to attend Court. The summons in this 'instance was treated as not served.
Golf Club Closing Day The Whakatane Coif Club s closing day for the .season will be next Saturday November 17. Visitors will be welcomed to the course, and a social afternoon will take place. Better Than Salt ! Whilst walking across one of his paddocks recently, Mr W. Paul, n farmer at White Pine was astonished to see a hen pheasant rise up directly in front of him. Imagine his even greater astonishment when on looking dow r n, lie discovered that lie was standing on its tail. The bird left a nest of fourteen eggs.
