SCOUT OUTING
PICNIC AT THORNTON WHAKATANE CUBS ENTERTAINED Fifty members ol' the Whakatane Cub Packs were the guests of the residents of Thornton last Saturday morning when a special picnic t promoted by the recently constituted Scout took place at the popular lagoon. The whole, gathering was a delightful and memorable success and must have gone a long way towards constituting the. Thornton Scout and Cub units.
The Whakatane boys arived shortly alter 10 p.m. and were regaled with ice creams. A demonstration parade under S.M. Ted Hughes and Cubmaster N. Dean was of great interest to the Thornton residents who had gathered in forcc to mark the occasion. ' The Cubs executed the Grand Howl, and later took part in various games and competitions.
Mr Hughes gave an interesting talk on the Cub movement and illustrated the various service and efficiency badges which were worn. The Thornton lads joined wholeheartedly in the fun and were keen contestants in the competition. The newly formed Thornton Scout troop under S.M. D. Scott was addressed by the County Commissioner. Before dispersing the ladies provided luncheon for the gathering which was voted by all as. a grand success. Mr W. Arbuckle chairman of the 9 Thornton Committee thanked the •? visitors for their attendance and expressed the opinion that it had gone a long way towards assisting Scouting in the district. The Commissioner replying hoped that it not be long before Thornton returned the visit. As a result of a,Bring and Buy Stall £7 was raised for Scout funds t whjch further benefited later by an individual donation of £5.
