MR AND MRS F. W. SNELLING

REPRESENTATIVE DISTRICT

GATHERING

Well known for their active interest in the district Mr and Mrs F. W. Snelling were guests of honour at a function arranged by the Edgecumbe branch of the Labour Party to mark their departure..

Lasting tributes were pa:id to them by Mr W. Alexander in a valedictory speech during which he recalled their long association and interest in the varied matters. concerning the community. Coming to Edge. cumbe after the close of the last war ; during which he served on Gallipoli and in France, Mr Snelling took up his farm Avlien the district was in the raw. During the years that followed he actively participated in any movement that spelt progress and his enthusiasm for this cause was always maintained. Mr Snelling served for many years on the School Committee and Domain Board and was politically well known as a member of the. local branch of the Labour Party. Mr and Mrs Snelling were prominently connected with the Edgecumbe Druids Lodge and arc both Past Officers of the Order.

Mrs Snelling was. presented with bouquets by Mrs J. Jesperson on behalf of the Labour Party and by Mrs R. Burgess on behalf of the Women's Institute. Mrs Snelling's interest in the Institute carries the mark of distinction and her departure from the district will remove a personality from its activities.

lri-asking the guests of honour to accept a gift, Mr Alexander expressed good wishes for their future welfare.

Replying, Mr Snelling said their decision to leave the district had not been easily made, lor it meant leaving a host of good, friends but it would be pleasant to remember many long and happy associations.

Dancing continued into the early hours to music by the Premier Band the control of proceedings being in the capable hands of Mr Jim Colebrook. The Monte Carlo was won by Miss Ngaire Carter and partner Spot Waltz, Miss J. Adams and Mr J. Peppereh and a Novelty Dance by Miss Alice Johnston (Auckland) and Sergeant G. Dodunski M.M.

The future plans of Mr and Hrs Snelling are uncertain and will be made during a long holiday, which Mr Snelling smilingly told a 'Beacon' reporter they felt was well earned.
