SPEECH CONTEST

HIGH SCHOOL EXPERIMENT

The second annual speech contest at the AVhakatane District High School was held before the. assembled pupils last Thursday afternoon. In order to make the competition fairer lor the iirst years it was divided this year into two grades, Junior for third and Senior for fourth, lil'th and sixth forms. The subject for the Juniors was a bio. graphy while the Seniors made a choice 'from a list of topical subjects the treatment of which called far more skill in marshalling ideas. Rev. J. G. Laughton acted as judge, assisted by Rev. H. Hogg, and Mr D. Hogg. The Junior competition was won by D. Hainill, who chose as his sub. ject Captain 11. F. Scott. He .-poke with confidence and sincerity, without any reference to notes, and with well-chosen language. Pamela Hammond speaking on R. L. Stevenson, was second and Judith Hansen (Charles Dickens) third. Other speakers were J. Carter (Rajah Brooks) < 13. Mundy (Napoleon) and Joyce Trumper (President Roosevelt) . In the Senior grade the winner was W. R. Law, who spoke with conviction and emphasis on "Atomic Energy." 'Kathleen speaking in a very pleasing and lucid manner on "Tlie Atomic Bomb" was second, and Jocelyn Wilson ("Broadcasting") third. Other competitors were jYTaire Goodwin ("Air Travel") and W. Kirk ("The Atomic Bomb"). In giving the decision of the judges Mr Laughton congratulated the speakers on their and said how agreeably surprised they were at the standard displayed. He explained the factors; tliac the judges had taken into consideration —the matter and its the diction and the delivery.
