CREAM STAND DANGER
ADVICE TO BE SOUGHT
QUESTION OF INSURANCE
An interesting discussion on the question of cream stands on ' County roads and the possible i danger therefrom with regard to 1 passing took place at the Whakatane County Council < . meeting last week ? when the matter was introduced by Mr J. Neilsen representing the Ran, gitaiki Farmers'' Union, who waited l on the council. Mr Neilsen said that few farmcis viewed the whole, problem seriously, and felt that it was a subject which the council should investigate along * with all other obstacles on the roads such as mail boxes. If the position "was allowed to drift it stood the , chance of bringing many problems, and lie suggested the advisability of the council taking out a comprehensive insurance cover to safeguard against any claims which might gpjgg out. of possible accidents- He mentioned the fact that the Mana_ kau County Council had already introduced such a policy and that from what he could gather a stand, ing levy of 2s per stand was made to 'meet the outlay, which gave a maxi;jnum cover of £250. This action indemnified the local body concern- ■ ed. He suggested that this, position anight bp improved upon by coming ;tinder the County Council's Co-op- . erative Insurance Scheme, and asked :that at least the whole position •should be explored and seriously considered. The chairman (Mr J. L. Burnett) "promised the speaker that the coun.cil intended going into the matter. At the present time however, he contended that as the council gave no permit for the erection of the stands they were not liable in the event of an acicdent. He admitted however tbat there - was real cause for alarm where cream lorries were forced to cross over to the wrong •.side of the road at corners. Members were of the opinion that the cover mentioned by Mr Neilsen wa.s too small. In a letter to the council the Farmers' Union stated further tbat under the Manakau scheme the total premium covering the 200 stands was £17. The possibility —ran the letter—of accidents might be. re_ ;mote but the liability was< always there and rural boxes and calf pens should be covered as, well. Their facilities were growing in numbers on the roads and were essential to most farmers who found it hnpract,"cable to move tliem behind their frontages. The council dccidcd to write the Manakau County Council asking for full particulars.
