ALL HALLOWES EVE
WHAKATANE is to be treated, for the first time in its history to a genuine Hallo'een evening, which will take place at the Caledonian Hall tomorrow evening. The event is hailed by all Scots as a novel night's entertainment with plenty of thrills and innocent fun. Traditional, Hallo'een dates back to the dimmest centuries of the past, when the Highlands of Scotland literally reeked with superstition, and when every glen, mountain or cranny was haunted by its own respective 'bogle.' On All Hallowes Eve, the ghosts of the past are expected to walk abroad* and to haunt the habitations of mortals. The modern version is a gathering for wholesome fun, when young and old units in burlesquing the fear§ which at one time attended the human efforts to appease the walking spectres.
