A DEPLORABLE STATE
TE TEKO ROAD CONDITIONS CONTINUOUS DUST-CLOUD Notification from the Public Works Department that the seal, ing of the highway through the township of Te Teko must be deferred until next year brought severe criticism from councillors at last Tuesday's meeting of the Whakatane County Council. Cr McCraeken contended th.it the ■council should move urgently'- to alleviate the deplorable state of affairs now obtaining in the township. Shops were all built right against the road and the existing conditions were simply shocking. '"This is the worst place in the County," declared Cr Hunter. "There is a permanent dust-cloud there all day and we should at least see to it that the P.W.D. seal some twenty chains this year." Cr Leslie said that it must be almost impossible for the shopkeepers to keep their foodstuffs clean. It certainly was no encouragement for the residents to take a greater pride in the appearance of their premises. The council decided to write the Department pointing out the urgency of the position and requesting reconsideration of its present decision.
