Otakiri Appreciation The greatest appreciation is felt by members of the Otakiri Farewell and Welcoma Home Committee, for the generous action of the Otakiri Women's Institute in making over the proceeds from their recent successful concert to the committee funds which have benefited substantially. Fire Brigade Dance All arrangements have now been completed for the Fire Brigade Dance which is to be held, in the Caledonian Hall on -Friday t 2nd November—this coming Friday. Patrons from all parts of the district will no doubt remember last Fire. Brigade Dance in, the Winter Show Buildings which was one of the most successful functions of the year as well as those of previous years. Friday night's 'turnout' promises to top them all. New Post Office Urged The urgent need for a new post office at Whakatane was placed before the House of Representatives by Mr W. Sullivan (National, Bay of Plenty), when the Post and Telegraph Estimates were being considered. Mr Sullivan said he would like to urge upon the PostmasterGeneral not only the liecessity for a new post office at but a more up to date telephone service for the whole area. The counter space in the post office was totally inadequate, he said, and citizens had to queue up.
Attacked by Pigs A most unusual type of accident was experienced by a small girl ? Nita aged 4 years, daughter of Mr and Mrs Clark of Otakiri } who was attacked by pigs. The victim apparently disturbed one of the pigs which was sleeping. It immediately turned upon her and a number of other pigs followed suit. Fortunately she was rescued in time to prevent serious, injury ? although she was admitted to the Wlia'katane Public Hospital suffering from bruises, abrasions and bites, Her condition is now reported to be satisfactory. A.T.C. in Recess Last Thursday Squadron 35 of the Air Training Corps officially went into recess until the beginning of February. The idea behind this scheme is to wait for Headquarters to prepare and announce a new peace, time syllabus. Squadron Leader Matron. former commandant of the Auckland Wing, has now been placed on the and the new commandant has been appointed in the person of Squadron Leader Thiele D.5.0., D.F.C. and two bars. Squadron . Leader Thiele has already visited a number of squad, rons in the having passed through Whakatane last week. When the A.T.C. commences activity again, in 1946 it will be on an entirely different footing and will function on a strictly competitive basis. The way things, look at present it would appear that the A.T.C. is destined to become a world-wide youth organisation.
