NEW LEPER HOSPITAL

ESTABLISHMENT IN SOLOMONS His Excellency Sir Alexander W. G. Governor of Fiji and High Commissioner of the Western Pacific extended an invitation to the Secretary of the Lepers' Trust Board in New Zealand i.lr P. J. Twomey, to accompany Dr. C. J. Medical Superintendent of the Makogai Saion, on a leprosy survey in the Islands of the British South Solomons. On arrival at Guadalcanal the Senior Medical QfDr. A. joined the party and journeys were made to various Islands to get first-hand information in order to deal with this vital health problem. The number of those afflicted with the disease is approximately one thousand and at the present moment only about 100 are being treated. As a result of the visit it is now proposed to open up a central leper hospitalin the group. * The island people 1 hemselves have of late made several requests that this should be done at the earliest possible moment. All of the Mission Bodies doing Medical or Leper work in the Solomons met the party at a meeting in Guadalcanal which was presided over by Colonel Noel ? British Resident Commissioner. All representatives of the Churches present promised full cooperation in furthering this ' important project.
