GORGE ROAD
FURTHER COMPLAINT RECEIVED BOROUGH COUNCIL'S REACTION , A further letter from the County ; Council regarding the Wainui Te Wbare Gorge Road was received by" the Borough Council last Monday evening. The County raised the usual complaint regarding the bad state of the road and urged that •, steps should, be taken to put it la to a usable state of repair without dela3 r . It Avas further stated that the transfer of the. main highway■ from tlie Gorge Road to Hill crest meant a considerable gain to the Borough and had the. County Council thought that the old road would! have been allowed to fall into such a state of neglect the transfer would have been strenuously opposed. Commenting on the letter, the Mayor (Mr B. S. Barry) said that there had been no secret about the County's opposition to the transfer. They had opposed it tooth and 'nail, and only when a tally of the traffic listing the Hillcrest road had been taken, was the new position made obvious to the Highways Board. The Council decided to merely re. ceive the letter the Mayor commenting that the County CounciL. 1 lors could read' in the local paper details of what it was proposed to carry out in the Gorge. (An extract from the Works Com* mittee's report on the above mattexr reads as follows": 'The Foreman-En-gineer stated that he would be. pre_ pared shortly to proceed with the work of flood damage repair in the Wainui Te Whari Gorge for which the sum of £24.0 had been provided in the estimates).
