WHAKATANE AWAITS ITS TURN
After a ten-year wait, the latest reply from the PostmasterGeneral anent the long-projected erection of the new Whakatane Post Offsce > states that although sketch plans had been there were more urgent cases which the Department had to attend to first—such as the re. building of offices- destroyed by earthquake. Whakatane would have to await the consideration of but when the time was no time would be wasted in putting the work in hand. The letter which was read at last night's meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council causcd considerable comment amongst councillors. His. Worship the Mayor observed that he thought the Council should still follow the matter up, with a further letter in which it could be pointed out to the Minister the great urgency for improving the present facilities and the large area served. Cr Warren expressed the opinion that whilst it was necessary to expand the present staff such action was impossible owing to the limited accommodation. On the motion of the Mayor it was decided to instruct the Clerk to write again pointing out the drastic need for constructing the new building as auieldy as. pos-sible.
