WHAKATANE ASSN. MEETS

MEMORIAL SHIELD DONATED

The tenth annual general meeting of the Whakatane Cricket Association was held recently in the Borough Council Chambers. There were present delegates from the Whakatane United P. and T. Central and ' 9 Paroa Cricket Clubs and also several interested members of the public.

Mr L. 11. Spring as President of the Association took the chair, and •J ' in his address to the meeting spoke of the difficult}' some clubs had of getting enough playing members during the war years but he expressed the hope that now the war was ended that many more new members would be eager to join the various clubs and to take part in their activities. Of the representa. tive games the Association had played against Te Puke—won played at Tc Puke; the Rotorua Cricket Association—drew? played at Rotorua; the Pongakawa Cricket Association —won ? played at -Whakatane; Rotorua Air Force—won played at Whakatane,, Mr Spring expressed his pleasure at seeing many new faces at the meeting and welcomed back Mr T. Dickson and Mr J. Gillam both returned from overseas. The following officers were elected for the forthcoming year: — Patron: Mr R. S. Cleland. President: Mr L. R. Spring. Vice-presidents: Messrs W. Spring. £ The opening day was fixed for October 21. Mr and Mrs P. Coutts have donated a shield to the Association to be known as the "Andrew Coutts Mem T orial Shield," in remembrance of their son Andy. This shield is to be competed for and is to be awarded to the team which gains the most aggregate points over the whole season in ah competitions excluding any knock-out. competition.
