School Visiting Committee The visiting committee for the present month was appointed by the Whakatane School Committee ' t its last meeting in the persons ol' Messrs W. E. Armstrong and F. W. Ly.saght. Sugar for Marmalade The release of three pounds of sugar per person for marmalademaking will be made, as from September 21. This was announced by the Minister of Mr Sullivan, on Saturday. Social Security Benefits The local Postmaster notifies that the September instalments of the above-mentioned benefits wili ,be payable on the following dates: Age Benefits 19th instant; Miscellaneous Benefits 121 st instant; Family A'lowance 2oth instant. School Roll Numbers The Headmaster, Mr T. B. Hubbard reported at the last meeting of the Whakatane School Committee on Wednesday evening that the school roll numbers were as follows: High School 203; Middle School 309; Infant School 190; making a total of 702 pupils attending. Signs of the Times> Once again, caravan trailers are making their appearance. Motorists will doubtless have pre-war memories of the roads during the summer holidays being comparatively crowded with holiday makers 'caravaning/ With the introduction of petrol rationing they suddenly faded from view and only ail od.d one here and there was to be seen. School Tennis Courts At its meeting on Wednesday evening the Whakatane School Committee. decided to have four loads of soil placed on two of the four tennis courts by the swimming bath* in the hope that they might be playable tb!s year. The other two courts arc at present in satisr factory condition. The Mr I. B. Hubbard, pointed out that actually eight or twelve courts were necessary at the school, and suggested that four more on the other side of the. school be laid down in bitumen. These would then serve as basketball grounds and a physical training area, besides being good fast tennis, courts.. Qtakiri Open Show Attention is drawn to the advertisement in today's issue regarding the Open Show promoted by the Otakiri Women's which takes place on Saturday next in the lecal ball. An interesting feature will be the fioral display by Mrs V.. Peck who is the holder of the highest award of the Royal Horticultural Society for lloral work. Special features are also Included in the decorative section. The committee responsible is to be warmly congratulated on its enterprise which illustrates the growing lead taken by Women's Institutes in rural areas. The general public can be relied upon to give the exhibition the fullest possible support.
