VICTORY CELEBRATIONS

COMBINED GATHERING MOOTED WHEN FINAL DRAFTS RETURN The Borough Council was invited by letter from the Chamber of Commerce at its meeting on Monday evening to consider the possibility of arranging for a linal and propeily organised district Victory Celebration at some future date (probably November) when the iinal drafts from overseas had returned and when town and country could unite in doing homage to the. men who had served overseas. The Mayor queried the possibility of getting all men home from service to attend such a gathering but promised to bring the matter before the Welcome Home Committee. Crs Canning and Warren both strongly supported .the suggestion maintaining that in the past the men bad been welcomed home in dribs and drabs and it was on^ T right that there should be a combined effort to mar'k their return. Cr Warren spoke of a district picnic.

The Mayor said he took exception to any statement to the effect that Whakatane had clone nothing to mark V.J. Day. It was actually one of the few towns which had planned a celebration and the Children's Day was a pronounced success . Cr Shapley mentioned a suitable war memorial which be said would have to be considered in the near future.
