RED CROSS SHOP
ASSISTING BUILDING FUND PUBLIC SUPPORT APPRECIATED At a meeting of the Whak-atane lied Cross Society held in the. Borough Council Chambers on August 21 last it was decided unanimously that the Red Cross Shop proceeds bo put to the Red Gross Building Fund until the end of when it was decided to close the shop. Mrs Sullivan said the committee owed much to the generosity of Sir Ernest Davis who had allowed them '9 the use of the shop as long as required as long as the war lasted. Now that collection for the Patriotic Fund had closed down the committee must decide the future programme for the shop. Over had been raised for the current Patriotic appeal. The large number of ladies present 'signified their willingness to carry on with the streets canvass, for the next month. It is to be hoped that the public will support this appeal as generously as they have done in the past. The Red Cross Socicty has a large peacetime, programme ahead of it and having it's own Headquarters will be of great assistance. Speaking before the National Conference of the British Red Cross Society the Countess of EI don, Chairman of the Planning Sub-Com-mittcCj said: "I will take the first thing which I think we must have to ensure a line virile Red Cross after the war and that is a Red Cross Centre. I would like to see every division having its own Red Cross house or centre . . . there must be some point where, the general public know they can come for Red Cross help. The day of amateurishness is and we must have a Red Cross Centre where people «an corae j and where our practises our training and our services centre from," Speaking before the N.Z. Red Cross Society Dominion Conference Miss Lambie ? head of the C.N JR.. and representing the Department of Health urged the need for keeping the Red Cross V.A. Detachments together and enlarging them for peacetime work ? and spoke of the many fields of service where their training could be utilised. The committee appreciates the support tiie public of Whaxatane has so generously given to all aspects of the Society's work ? and is confident that the splendid' iecord of the Red Cross Shop will finish up in a blaze of financial gloiy.
