New Ration Books New ration hooks will be- issued next month and are. now being piinted according to a statement made by the Rationing Controller. He added that the books would be much the same as those now in use. Forthcoming Debutantes Ball Owing to the difficulty in obtaining evening dress these days the committee promoting the Victory Ball at. Taneatiia has decided to make the question of dress optional. There will also be a lounge provided for spectators who do not desire to dance.
A Narrow Shave One of the most prominent figures at yesterday's fire was Mr Nev Bremner who appeared to be doing his utmost to help the brigadesmcn in their work. Mr Bremner'a. neck was decorated with a gory bandage the result ol" a severe cut sustained from a shower of falling glass when he first discovered the lire.
New Borough Truck The Whakatane Borough Council at its meeting last evening decided to accept the offer of Messrs Arm-' strong's garage of £17.1 as a trader in value on its old. Electrical Department truck and to , purchase a truck for £558 from the same flim. The Electrical Engineer Mr F. W. Lysaght jsaid the old. truck had beep purchased in 1937 and had had practically no servicing since.
Dairy Farm Workers' Wages An agricultural workers fixation order just has fixed the minimum rate of wages for agricultural workers employed on dairy farms. The weekly wages are: Workers under 17 £1 15; 17-18, £2 ss; 18-19, £2 15s; 19-20, £3 ss; 20-21 £3 15s; over 21, £4 ss. If board and lodging are not provided these rates are to be increased by 20s a week.
Rubbish Musi be in Containers The Borough Foreman, Mr W. Henderson, informed, the Borough Council last evening that there had been some complaints when the rubbish collection' truck had refused to take rubbish unless it was in a container. Some ratepayers expected to be able to send bulky matter away such as mudguards' and old piping. He had taken a firm stand in the matter and would continue to do so unless directed to do otherwise.
Trenchant Criticism The fact that he had been required to obtain a declaration from the owner of the house he was engaged in building to show that he intended using the building as a permanent home apparently caught one writer to the Borough Council last evening on the raw. His forceful tirade concluded with the observation that in future it would probably be necessary to obtain the names of a client's ancestors when wanting to huikl an oversized dog kennel.
Motor Accidents in August There were '22 people killed in motor accudeats during August—the worst record of any month since March 1940 when the month's road deaths totalled 2(5. Eight fatalities occurred, throughout New Zealand on VJ-Oay tfcree of the victims being pedestrians three being cyclists one a motor cyclist and one a truck driver. Five men were killed on August 6 in a level crossing smash near Napier and of the remaining accidents during the month, four involved pedestrians (including a small child) two motor another a cyclist and two involved occupants of trucks.
Businessmens Basketball Challenge The long awaited clash between the Whakatane Businessmen and the local Girl Basketball reps will take place on Saturday next on the Domain ground at 1.30 p.m. This annual challenge which has excited so much interest over the past lew weeks bids fair to create even a greater diversion this year than previously. It is understood that the businessmen have been training assiduously and that Whakatane's fair damosels will have to be on their toes to snatch another victory. Members of the Businessmens team are reminded that a practice match will ta'ke place on Thursday evesring at 5 p.m. in the Domain.
