HOSPITAL MERGER

THE illuminating report by the County Chairman regarding the reaction of the officers of the Waikato Hospital Board to the proposed merging of Whakatane hospual interests, was interesting in the extreme to County and Borough ratepayers. As previously stated, the levy in both County and Borough under the Waikato administration would be halved. One thing, however, still remains m doubt, and that is the potential burden of debt which would be involved by the Waikato Board's progranime of expenditure, amounting to one and a half , million pounds. This is a matter which demands the closest scrutiny by the local interests before any definite pledge is given. It would be folly to embrace a temporarily lowered rate if the potential levy was to outstrip the figures which may be levied locally by the existing Whakatane Board as constituted at present.
