THE GORGE ROAD
TAPER THOROUGHFARE URGES*
COUNTY COUNCIL'S CONCERN
Writing the County Council in re-* sponse to its letter urging that, theWainui Te Wliara road be put' intoa better state of repair the Wha-* katane Borough Council stated that the reason why funerals tlrd not use this route was that it was used extensively for the driving of i.tock that the road was narrow throughout its entire lengthy and a funeral could be held up on its way to thie cemetery for a considerable time and with possible serious consequences. It. might be possible later to install a telephone at the cemetery when the sexton could report to the undertaker that the road, was clear of stock. In regard to the flood damage, the roadway was of small value to the Borough as a traffic outlet • and serious consideration*, must be afforded the spending of the - substantial sum necessary to restore the traffic-way and protect the work against a similar future happening.
The County Council resolved that the Borough Council be advised thjkt it was still of the opinion that Maraetotara Gorge Road —Borough section —should be reinstated to its original condition and width and would appreciate the Borough's further advice.
