POROPORO FLOODING
Sir—Your correspondent of August 28, is> either too young to or his memory is short. As lie over 40 years ago the Maoris and settlers around Poroporo were growing maize, pota-* toes kumaras and other crops. .In 1904 ? there was a flood which caused all the Poroporo people to take their families and what belongings they could rescue in canoes to Spur's corner where Mr and Mrs Spur were good enough to put theitt up till the flood waters resided. That was in. the days when there were no drains. I am one with Mr Soutar ? Mr Smith and Mr Parker. We get a flood every and because the European! settlers get two floods in twelve years or so % they are learning the raising of Station Road and the drainage of the district. I can remember much more about Poroporo 40 years ago, and can also remember that there were few Euro 1 * pean settlers in that part then. Yours etc. G. KELLY.
