Bitumen Rationed Intimation from the Building Controller was received by the Borough Council at its last meeting to th.c effect that bitumen supplies were now oil' the rationed list. Victory Art Union As a result of the 'Victory' Art Union run by the New Zealand! Trades Council, the sum of £s'-»,o00 has been paid over to the Patriotic Fund Council. It is interesting to recall that, in the Whakatane Zone the Art Union realised £121 } being divided up over the. area as follows: Whakatane Borough £79 10s; Thornton £1 10s; Edgecumbe £/"- Tc Teko £10 lis; Wainui £1; W r aimana £1; Taneatua £12; Awakeri £3 10s; Mataba £5. Sunday Street Lighting Replying to a question from His! Worship the Mayor ? at the last meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council as to whether it was posr sible to bring the lights on earlier on a Sunday evening, the Electrical Engineer, Mr F. W. Lysaght explained that although this s could be done it would entail a fair amount of work as the whole system was controlled by a series, of time switr ches. If the lights were to be brought on earlier on a Sunday it would mean altering all the. switches, j and then on Monday f changing them all back again.
Sanitary Service At the las.t meeting of thc s Whakatane Borough Council the Mayor reported that he had linalised arrangements with the sanitary contractor for the Continuation of his services for a further two years on the terms previously reported. Cr Shapley reported that the windmill for pump r ing water at the sanitary depot was worn out. The estimated cost of installing a shed containing an electrically driven purap, ( complete with wiring etc., was £64. The council resolved that an electrically d"iven pump be installed. Trees at Hill Cemetery A report received at the last meet r ing of the Borough Council on the condition of the trees planted at the Wbakatane Hill Cemetery showed that this venture in planting was well on its way towards becoming a complete success. The Pinus Insignis were doing very well ? although two of three Flowering Gums had not taken so readily. It was intended to plant more trees on the banks by the main and if these responded as well as those which werse already planted had, it would only be a matter of two or three years before the cemetery took on a very attractive appearance.
Herd Recorders Available | A further 72 herd recorders are j now available for service with dis- ! trict herd improvement associations in New Zealand with the, termination of this year's 10-days' course of training at Massey Agricultural College. Of this total nearly 80 are young men in contrast to the previous five years of war during which the enrolments were almost exclusively confi«ed to women. This year's most of whom have already been allotted to districts bring to 852 the total trained at the College sin«e the inception of the New Zealand Dairy Board's Scheme in 1928. Purchase of Truck Tlic Pongakawa Rabbit Board, at its last monthly meeting } received a report from Messrs Hale Nicholls Ltd. that new one ton Ford trucks had arrived at Wellington ready for assembly and that price would bej about £500* They recommended that the Board make application for a permit and stated that it would take about three months before it would be known whether a truck could be purchased. As the Board had not been allocated a vehicle at the recent V.R.D. sale of trucks in Auckland it was decided that the secretary be authorised to apply for the necessary permit and also that he make further enquiries regarding a Heavy Traffic License , and additional costs for the one ton Ford job.
