A WAR MEMORIAL?
NOW that the war-drums have ceased, it will not be long before the question of a suitable district memorial to those who made the supreme sacrifice will be raised. Three years ago the suggestion of a Memorial Museum was discussed in these columns, this however could with mu'sh benefit be linked with • a broader and more appealing t scheme of a Memorial Hall, imposing enough in its architecture to convey the thought behind its inception and commodious enough to cater for all civic functions likely to be held in this centre for many years. There is no question, that at the present time Whakatane definitely lacks a hall in keeping with its growing population and importance as a commercial centre. In the construction of such a building local bodies could readily subscribe on behalf of their ratepayers whilst town and country residents would also find the proposal a popular one in view of its utility, the obvious and vital need for it, and its revenueproducing possibilities as a rental proposition.
