STRAND BONFIRE
FEATURE OF CELEBRATIONS The disappointment experienced by many children on Wednesday eve.iing when th/e much discussed bonfire at the rear of the Strand failed to burn: as a result of the heavy rain which had fallen throughout th<e day was offset by the good display on Thursday evening when with the aid of liberal annoint' ments of old engine oil and other inflammable substances the pile of rubbish burst into flames and continued to burn merrily throughout th)& night, .. ,
The. crowd attracted to the spot consisted mainly of children who were given sparklets and other light fireworks which had been hastily combed from stationers' shops and comprised the last of their fireworks stocks from pre-war j^eas.
From a juvenile point of vieAV the event was a considerable success, and there Avas plenty of fun and banter as the flames licked up to-* wards the Japanese flag which had been placed at' the highest point. Cheers greeted the sight of the trophy being suddenly enveloped.
