GROYNES TO BE CONSTRUCTED UPPER HARBOUR WORKS t AUTHORISED In the course of a special report to the W T hakatane Harbour Board last "week the Engineer (Mr C. H, Brebner) stated that a 'boil' had developed on the side of the loop opposite the Wai-iwi creek on the upper river. This action had been steadily eroding the. bank at the end of Landing Road. He suggested the construction of a new groyne to deflect the surge to the centre of the stream where its action would not influence the. bank. The question of access to the western river bank was mentioned and it was suggested that the Board should endeavour to link up the two islands in that vicinity to the mainland in order to provide road access for the. cartage of spoil rather than to carry on with the more expensive method of barging the material up-stream* The board decided to grant authority for the construction of the groynes at. an estimated cost of £275, whilst the chairman (Mr W. R. Boon) was authorised further to acquire the necessary land to give access,to the 'sland' and in the event of the two islands being Crown lands to approach the Lands and Survey Department with a view to vesting them in the Board.
It "was further decided that representatives from the Wha'katane Paper Mills be .asked to confer* with the Board at its next meeting (October) for the purpose of discussing the freighting of the company's inward and outward cargoes.
