Local and General

;Giant Egg | A few days ago, ?t resident of Thornton attracted our attention with an egg of gigantic proportions. The egg from a black crosswas brown in colour and was definitely a 'whopper.' Measuring three and a half inches; in length, and seven and a half inches in circumference it weighed six and would have supplied an omelette for the whole family. The owner o! the egg, we believe is concentrating on evolving a strain of hens capable of producing such giant fruit at the rate of two per day! Abundance of Shags Residents along the river bank in upper James Street report that lately the river has become overrun with shags. Thic birds, they say. can be seen in large, flights either Hying or sitting at almost any and are becoming a pest. A few days ago 59 weie counted sitting on one knoll in the while others Ayere also dotted about here and there on other stumps protruding from the water. Obviously one reason for the shags becoming so plentiful is the fact that for the past five years during the shortage and rationing of they have been left practically and consequently have multiplied to an extraordinary much to the detriment of the supply of young fish in the river.'
