WIFE ASSAULTED
LOCAL MAORI CHARGED
ONE MONTH'S IMPRISONMENT
Charged with assaulting his wife > Eliza Horopapera, on August b f Pete of ,Whakjajtane, who pleaded guil'ty } was yesterday sentenced to one month's imprisonment in the local gaol by the Whakatane Court. Messrs L. Brown and C. S. Armstrong were on th)e Bench. Sergeant Farrell stated that at 9.30 a.m. on Sunday morning ) he had received a telephone call asking him to go to accused's home, and on doing so ? had found accused's wife with a badly lacerated finger and black marks round her thiroat. She also complained of other injuries sustained when her husband had assaulted her. The trouble was alleged to have arisen through her visit to town on Saturday without her husband's permission. He had apparently brooded over and while she had been engaged on domestic duties on Sunday morning he had attacked her from behind. Defendant was convicted and sentenced to one month's imprisonment as stated.
