THAT VACANT LOT

REBUILDING PERMIT REFUSED

HARBOUR BOARD'S VIEWS

Through representations made by^L } , Mr W. Sullivan, M.P„ the Whaka-. tanc Harbour Board has received J notification that the. Building Con-* troller still regrets his inabiity to grant a permit for rebuilding the shop on the Strand which was derstoyed by fire some four years ago. It Avas stated that though claims for lire reinstatement were recognised the application could only be reviewed favourably as soon, as possible. Thie chairman (Mr W. R. Boon) said it seemed a very strange thing to see this application being continually turned down whilst other building construction was going on elsewhere. He understood that two permits for new halls had been granted in the Borough and yet while there was a vital necessity for shopping accommodation there was apparently no grounds for rebuilding premises destroyed by fire. Mr Hunter added that the buildr ing site already possessed party walls and would only present roofing and lining. The Board decided, to write the Building Control Committee pointing out th|e amount of other buildings going up in the district and ~ urging that in view of the acute shortage of shopping accommodation the permit be granted without dolay.
