W.D.F.U.

MEETING AT AWAKERI A most enjoyable social afternoon was heUl in the Awakeri Hall on July 10 when the Awakeri branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union celebrated its Kith birthday. There were over seventy present among whom were members of the Te Teko W.D. and of the Edgecumbe and Whakatane Women's Institutes. Members had arranged to bring their most interesting antiques and the resulting display was greatly ajlmired. A varied collection of beautiful and interesting articles— silver ivory, china and lace some being over 200 years old, created great interest throughout the afternoon. Mrs Rushbrook opened the musical programme singing two songs which were greatly enjoyed. Two recitations bv Mrs Hepburn were most popular as was Mrs N. Carter's de.lightful singing of two songs. Several items of singing and recitations by Mrs Thompson's infant classes and the pupils of Miss Aitken from the local school were greatly appreciated by the audience. A competition in which different teams, took part created much merriment and then Mrs Carter and Mrs Rushbrook sang a duet in their usual pleasing manner. After the afternoon tea interval a wall competition was wos by Mrs Murphy. A bring and buy stall did brisk business and raffles were won as follows: Mrs. Brizzle's fruit cake won by Mrs Murphy; Mrs Allan's fruit cake won by Mrs Jones; Dinner won by Mrs Hanna. The monthly competition results were: Best fruit Mrs Roberts 1; Mrs McKenzie 2; Mrs D-. Mac Donald 3. Best flower Mrs Roberts 1; Mrs McKenzie 2; Mrs Barr 3. Best vegetable, Mrs Barr 1; Mrs Knight 2; Mrs H. Jensen 3. The singing of God Save the King brought a pleasant afternoon to a close.
